Electronic Signature

An electronic signature, also known as an e-signature or biometric signature, refers to information in digital form, which is legally associated with the signer and that which is utilized by the signer to authenticate. It usually consists of a series of alphanumeric characters and is generated through an installed keyboard or computer terminal. In this modern generation of signature systems, biometrics have emerged as one of the most convenient ways of authentication. It is the unique identification of an individual, which can be determined by means of physical factors like physique, gender, age or race. The major benefits of digital signatures are: faster processing of paper-based documents, reduction in the cost of postage, reduction in the possibility of tampering or forgery, and establishment of legal and financial responsibility on the part of the parties concerned. Digital signatures have been adopted in various areas for e-shopping, registration of domain names, supply chain management, identity protection, billing systems, supply chain management and for secure data storage.  

An electronic signature is a virtual identification key, which has the same characteristics as a password, which authenticates and guarantees the integrity of a signed document. With the use of signatures, the possibility of tampering with a signed document is reduced considerably. There is no way by which an impostor can create a forged copy of any document without leaving a physical trace of his activity. The signature of the sender protects the transaction from being diverted to some other party. It also makes the transfer of the ownership of the signed document easier.

In order to create an electronic signature, the document to be signed must be recorded digitally and the personal information of the signatory (the person who signs) must be encrypted. An additional layer of security is added to the document by using a random key. The secret key is generated based on a secret algorithm that is printed on a label or sticker attached to the document. The digital signature must be entered by the user in a digital format such as a bar code, digital signature tag or smart tag.

While there are several advantages of using electronic signatures, there are also some disadvantages. For instance, e-signatures are often prone to having human error. There is also the possibility that when the wrong person inputs the digital signature, it could result in misinterpretation of the document. There are some ways, however, in which e-signatures are more secure than handwritten signatures.

E-Signatures eliminate the need for a third party to verify the content of a document before it is signed. Also, digital signatures can be verified manually, but this requires specialized software. Most importantly, the signatures are generally more secure than handwritten signatures because of the use of a secret key. This secret key cannot be copied, altered in any way.
